Synopsis

A presentation of the capabilities of geospatial systems and datasets is followed by a discussion of how the technology can be used in innovative ways in business and leisure. Whilst some industries have been using geospatial systems for years, recent changes in technology, availability, and cost have made the technology potentially beneficial to a much wider constituency.

About the speaker

Iain Cooke is the chair of the BCS Geospatial Specialist Group, and Chief Technical Officer of Tadpole Technology Geospatial Systems Division. After designing and developing object-oriented systems in the manufacturing and banking sectors, Iain co-founded Conic Systems Ltd in 1991 to focus on geospatial and pen-based mobile tablet computing. During 15 years in the geospatial sector, Iain was the architect of Conic GIS, which Ordnance Survey GB used to become the worlds first all-digital collector and publisher of national mapping, and has gained a wide experience of other Geospatial systems and deployments internationally, acting as strategist, consultant, system architect, team lead and developer, and has presented numerous papers and published several articles on Geospatial and mobile computing. Tadpole acquired Conic in 1999, and Iain has led the division to focus on third-party Geospatial technology, and recently has played a key role in Ordnance Survey’s major program to modernise its geospatial and operational systems across the board.
