Hacking and the law

John S MacKenzie, Partner, Pinsent Masons

Wednesday 12th January 2005, 6:30 pm (refreshments available from 6:10 pm)

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 36 York Place, Edinburgh EH1 3HU (street map)

With technical solutions giving only limited protection, what if anything, can a victim do if they are subjected to an attack? Is so called "ethical hacking" legal, and what punishments exist to deter hackers, phishers, spies and thieves?

About the speaker

John MacKenzie, a partner with international law firm Pinsent Masons, is one of a select band of Solicitor Advocates specialising in contentious IT matters in Scotland. John focuses on the process of dispute resolution, whether through the courts, or using alternative dispute resolution processes such as mediation or arbitration or through negotiation.

Since qualifying as a solicitor advocate John has dealt with several major claims before the Court of Session, and continues to appear before the higher courts on a regular basis.
