The Grid is widely seen as a step beyond the Internet, incorporating
pervasive high-bandwidth, high speed computing, intelligent sensors and
large-scale data resources into a seamless pool of managed and brokered
resources available to industry, science and the general public. Since 2000,
very large amounts of money and effort have been expended, and continue to be
expended, on developing the core middleware which services organisations will
require to use the Grid.
The talk will focus on the history of Grid computing and where the
technology is now going with a focus on the current Grid Services work and how
it may impact business and commerce in the near future.
Dr Mark Parsons is the Commercial Director of EPCC and the National
e-Science Centre at The University of Edinburgh. He is centrally involved in a
number of UK and European Grid development projects and is uniquely placed to
comment on this exciting new area of computing.
