Project Management Techniques: talk and discussion

Pam Chambers, Capita Education Services

Joint meeting with Proms-G Scotland

Wednesday 20th November 2002, 6:30 pm

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 36 York Place, Edinburgh

The talk will focus on the practical application of project management techniques in a 3 year project to implement a Student Management Information System (SIS) within a new higher education institution. The SIS is a business-critical application because the output from the system provides the returns to the statutory bodies responsible for funding the institutions and for student awards. The system also had to be implemented within rigid time-frames to meet deadlines dictated by the Academic calendar. This implementation of the SIS involved the convergence of 13 autonomous Academic Partners onto a single software system. The Prince project management methodology was used, and during the course of the project many lessons were learnt about effectively controlling and monitoring projects highly subject to change, managing project scope and system and process convergence. The project team was also dispersed over numerous locations which affected team management and project organisation.

Pam Chambers is currently the Project Manager for Capita Education Services implementing Information Systems in Scotland for further and higher education institutions. Previously, she was the project manager for UHI Millennium Institute. She has the ISEB Certificate in Project Management and is a PRINCE 2 registered practitioner.

Discussion

After the short talk there will be an opportunity break out into two or three smaller groups depending on numbers attending the talk.

Three members of the Proms-G Scotland group will be available to chair each of the break out groups (Jamie Thin, Mike Chad and Frank Waterworth) and each group will have one specific question to discuss pertinent to the content of Pam's talk.
