Wednesday 30th October 2002, 6:30 pm

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 36 York Place, Edinburgh

'Taken by the power of the early Linux 1.0, Jim Jarvie became an avid fan - since then the power and flexibility of Linux has grown beyond all predictions. Within Central Scotland Police, Linux has been tested, re-tested and proven to be a robust, industrial strength competitor - put to many more uses than the typical web serving it is often known as. One of the very first mission critical Oracle database servers to run on Linux was installed in Central Scotland Police where it continues to provide flawless service. But what is it really like to run a truly mission critical 24x7 organisation on Linux ? Just how do you configure Linux to support a user base of 1,000 people ? Jim will try to explain by sharing his personal experiences of Linux - Managing Large Installations.
