The role of GIS in dealing with Foot and Mouth in Scotland

Martin Johnston, Scottish Executive

Wednesday 9th October 2002, 6:30 pm
Refreshments served at 6:15 pm

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 36 York Place, Edinburgh

Martin Johnston is a Principal Agricultural Officer in the Scottish Executive Agricultural staff. Although not a computer or GIS specialist, he and others were involved in the co-ordination of mapping during the Foot and Mouth outbreak in Scotland.

He will outline the main events during the Scottish Foot and Mouth outbreak, focussing on the contribution made by GIS in dealing with the disease eradication process. He will also suggest areas where that contribution could be improved, and hopefully provoke discussion on how GIS developments can enhance the processes of disease control and emergency planning generally.
