Neuro Diversity in Cyber Security – My journey from Teaching to Technology

Synopsis

Neuro diversity is a diverse grouping that we are only just starting to understand, and I speak as someone who has neuro-diverse challenges. I see mentions of neurodiversity as a ‘superpower’ and while I appreciate the intention behind the idea, it hasn’t been a superpower to me. It is the reason behind some parts of my personality and for most of my working life it has been a challenge – especially moving from teaching to Information Security. It is the ‘Jiminy Cricket’ on my shoulder that constantly reminds me of my shortcomings. “What do you mean, you can’t take professional exams? If you’re serious about being a part of this profession you would roll up your sleeves and make an effort”. I was shocked to a standstill when this was said to me. Where could I go from there? The answer is that about 3 years later I am a Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society and a Charter Cyber Professional with the UK Cyber Security Council. I am not special or remarkable, but I have that great gift – people who believe in me more than I do. This talk is framed around my journey but has the wider aim of hoping to help neuro diverse folk find some encouragement, and neuro-typical colleagues to understand a little more about how they can support us.

About the speaker

Wendy specializes in Risk, Assurance, and Human Factors in Cyber Security, focusing on the critical role of people in business security. A Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS) and a Chartered IT Professional, Wendy also holds Chartered status in Governance and Risk Management with the UK Cyber Security Council. She serves on the BCS Community Board and Council. As an experienced lecturer and author, Wendy has pioneered innovative approaches to communicating cyber risks and mitigations. Her works include Nettie in Cyberland, a children's series promoting cyber safety, and Eesha and the Mud Monster Mystery, addressing text-assisted bullying for older children. She has also developed Cyber Safety Stories for Seniors, a series tailored to older audiences. In addition to her children's books, Wendy co-authored The CIO’s Guide to Information Security Management and wrote the BCS title Information Security Auditor. Her insights extend to exploring lessons from the COVID era for cyber resilience. Wendy’s work bridges the gap between technical cybersecurity needs and effective communication, making her a leading voice in the field.
