Mentor Capitalism and the New Economy

The last few years has seen the most dramatic events in technology businesses. Now that the internet bubble has bust, was it all a con trick? Or was there genuine value created? And what are the prospects now for technology entrepreneurs?

Ian Ritchie founded OWL (which pioneered web-like technology) in 1984 and sold it to Panasonic in 1989. In the last decade he has assisted with the creation and growth of around a dozen technology companies, mostly in Scotland. In many cases these companies are world leaders in their field and are creating jobs and wealth here in Scotland.

Ian Ritchie will look at how technology companies are created, the issues concerned with their growth, and the way in which the value created is realised.

Ian Ritchie is a director of Voxar, VIS, Digital Bridges, Mindwarp Pavilion, Active Navigation, and EPIC. He is also on the board of Channel4 TV, Scottish Enterprise and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), and is on the advisor board of PenTech, a new Scottish-based technology investment fund.
