Data Protection is the responsibility of everyone who handles personal
data. Additionally as BCS professionals we have a code of conduct
requiring us to ensure that we comply with relevant
legislation. However, automated systems do not always, of themselves,
ensure compliance; this relies both on system controls and
characteristics and on practice and procedures outwith the remit of
IT. This presentation will look at the Data Protection Principles,
consider to what extent IT professionals have a duty to check that
systems in which they are involved will comply and look at some ways
in which compliance might be checked and demonstrated.
