With the launching of Action 2000 and the involvement of more politicians higher
up the hierarchy, we now see that the Millennium Issue is getting much more attention.
John Ivinson will describe the current thinking and plans behind Action 2000. He will also
draw on other issues of concern which are beginning to emerge such as embedded systems,
skills shortages, stockpiling and the role of the small/medium enterprise in the supply
chain. One of the other major projects facing the IT professional is the advent of EMU and
the introduction of the euro. What impact is that having on the priorities in front of the
average IT manager?
John Ivinson's Year 2000 Activities
- Having been appointed Spokesperson for BCS he set up a Working Party which has produced
two books on the Year 2000 Issue and a third is in preparation.
- He has also chaired a number of international conferences on Year 2000 and given several
papers on the subject. He has appeared on television and radio and is described by the
press as an "expert" on the subject. He has acted as a consultant to a number of
companies advising on strategy and planning for Year 2000.
- In collaboration with another consultant he has written a report commissioned by DTI for
Mrs. Barbara Roche M.P. (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State - DTI) on the IT Skills
Shortage problem.
- He is actively involved with Action 2000 and, with others, is developing and classifying
information on Best Practice for Year 2000 to be aimed at all UK enterprises. In addition
he is continuing his work on developing the projects identified in the Skills Shortages
report and is helping DTI with the embedded systems and the chip problem.
- As a result of all these activities he has developed a very wide network of contacts
throughout Britain on all aspects of the subject which has proved invaluable in this
situation.
